Links

A popular webpage will have many links pointing to it from external and related ecommerce web sites. It is seen by search engines as a measure of the importantce of your website and is taken into account when google calulates its measure of website relevancy called pagerank. If you have the Google toolbar installed with advanced features enabled on your browser you can see your site's PageRank score when you visit it.

The most important factor in getting others to link to your site is having a site worthy of a link. In other words, have a site or page that a directory editor or site owner thinks would be of benefit to their audience.

One Way - A one-way link is a link which goes to a website but no link is on that website going back to the linking site. Such a link, if obtaned naturally and without intervention, is the ultimate vote for the quality of your site used in ranking by search engines.

Reciprocal - A reciprocal link is where both sites have a link, which go to each other. Reciprocal links are not beneficial for search engine placements but can still drive traffic to your site if people click on them.

Linking Text - The anchor text used is important, as it helps inform the search engines what the site being linked to is about, therefore helping it rank for that word. Encourage inbound links to your site to use anchor text containing your site's keywords by writing content specific to those keywords. There are hundereds of Internet directories on the web. If your site is focused on a specific subject then search for niche directories in that field and submit to them.

How Important Is Page-Rank?

Pagerank is much less important today as a factor in search engine positionings than it was prior to 2006 and it is not unusual for high pagerank sites to rank lower than low pagerank sites in SERPS. Nevertheless, a pagerank of one or two should be expected of the homepage of a small and relatively new online shop website that has been live for around half a year.

Pay Per Click

Adverts from relevant websites can be a quick and easy way of generating quality traffic to your site. Google offers an advertising scheme on a pay per click basis via adwords and adsence and is the main means of advertising webpages for ecommerce solutions outside of organic search engine optimisation. Pay per click does not affect organic search results as the inbound links are usually displayed in a dedicated advertisement division of the SERPs.
